Bomb blast: Death toll rises to five

by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi

The death toll in Monday's suicide bomb blast at Chitra Lane, Narahenpita rose to five yesterday with another civilian succumbing to his injuries at the Intensive Care Unit of the Colombo National hospital.

"He died in the morning and there are three more injured persons receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit," Deputy Director of the Hospital(Accident Service) Dr. Anil Jasinghe said. The deceased has been identified as A. Warnakulasuriya, from Badulla.

Of the three warded at the ICU, two are Police personnel who will be transferred to the Police Hospital today, Dr. Jasinghe added.

Police suspect the bomb blast was intended to target Prime Minister Rathnasiri Wickremanayake who was to travel via the same route to attend an official function.

Following the incident, a total of 16 were injured. Twelve including a school girl are still being treated at the hospital and they are out of danger. Two were to be discharged yesterday.
