Attempt on PM's life: No protest from UNP

by Ravi Ladduwahetty

The UNP's links with the LTTE is further evidenced by the second assassination attempt on a Sri Lankan Head of State at election time within a span of 22 months, SLFP General Secretary and Minister of Mahaweli Development and Parliamentary Affairs Maithripala Sirisena told a news conference at Visumpaya yesterday.

This is manifestly clear since the UNP which has not raised a finger in protest, he said.

There seems to be a strange coincidence between the LTTE wanting to eliminate People's Alliance leaders at election time and the deft silence of the UNP, he noted.

The Minister was responding to a question raised by a journalist as to whether there was evidence and veracity of the Government members alleging that the UNP was linked to the LTTE.

Quoting more examples, the SLFP General Secretary said that "it was ironic that the UNP was able to successfully conduct election campaigns in the northern and eastern regions of the country without any security threats while the PA candidates would not dare to roam these two provinces".

The UNP has never condemned the LTTE and they did not utter a word against the ban against the Tigers both in Sri Lanka and internationally which was done in the best interests of the country, the Minister added, in response to a journalist's query as to why the Government was always dragging the alleged UNP-LTTE link at election time.
