Watch a Nation stand behind their leader

Watch how a Nation (USA) rally behind her leader. Watch the Opposition (Democrats) rally behind their Nation's President, George W. Bush. Our politicians, especially Ranil Wickremesinghe should take this as an object lesson and learn or entirely quit politics.

An improved performance

The previously reviled JVP has at the right time shown wisdom beyond their age as a Party. They have adroitly placed themselves in a "win, win" situation. An improved performance by the PA and their allies will bring credit and credibility, to the JVP by virtue of their monitoring role, while any and all failures by the ruling coalition, will rebound on their shoulders, with the mediator being only a shell shocked by-stander, or onlooker.

Notwithstanding all the quotes, comments and opinions in this communication, it is very necessary, nay vital that all patriotic Sri Lankans stand steadfast in their resolve to ensure the territorial integrity of the country, and also become truly Dharmista in thought and deed while placing the larger interest of the nation at a higher (preferably the highest) level than any parochial learnings.

That Sri Lanka is a veritable paradise is an indisputable fact, and this despite the fact that politicians of different hues have tried (and are trying) to do their best to tarnish and sully her image.

It is up to us, the common folk to nudge and needle the selfish and self seeking politicians masquerading as representatives of the people, long after the hustings and elections, to stay firmly on course without thinking of personal aggrandizement, power, wealth and glory.

A lesson for opposition leader

The terrorist attacks on the American World Trade Centre brings vivid memories of recent tragedy occurred in Sri Lanka.

As soon as this tragedy took place in Washington, former President Bill Clinton issued a statement requesting all Americans to support President Bush at this difficult time.

Also the Republican and Democrat Senators and other politicians rally round the President and other officials to bring stability to America.

But our politicians from the Opposition enjoyed the LTTE attack on our only Airport.

This is a good lesson for our Opposition Leader and his followers that patriotism is above politics and I request him to watch the action of American politicians for him to learn how to act on National tragedies.

Witticisms in the Army

During World War Two, when Field Marshal Montgomery was fighting with his 8th army in the desert there was a sudden breakdown in the supply lines and there was an acute shortage of food supplies especially bread.

Then a frontline officer contacted the base command at Cairo asking them to send a convoy of bread. The officer at the receiving end in the base was one Colonel Lord.

The message read thus - "Oh Lord send us some bread". The immediate reply was - "The Lord had heard thy prayer." This is actually a very true incident as I was a clerk in the Royal Army Service Corps at Cairo at the base supply regiment in the year 1944.

Visa fees

I am an international student studying in Australia for 2 years. Recently I have been awarded a grant to study in Canada as an exchange student. My flight from Australia to Canada goes through USA. I had 45 minutes of transit in USA.

I had to pay Australian $500 (Rs. 25000) to get the transit visa.

This was very bad to Sri Lankan citizens where Indians pay only $ 145 (Rs. 7500). This transit and visiting visa fees must be revisited and made fair.

True Sri Lankan style?

I came across an article published in one of the Sunday Newspapers "Bathiya and Santhush dismiss criticism" which prompted me to write this article.

Bathiya & Santhush won the Silver Award at the Azia Danysy World Music Festival in Kazakastan last week. Not much publicity was received by them other than standard features. Winning a Silver in a World Music Festival is a National Honour. Were they given National recognition? "No". The reason, no political patronage. National media has not featured these great kids. Politicians opening a toilet in some remote village get much more publicity. Why O Why ?

Now the latest scandal that the Sri Lankan's are famous for: True Sri Lankan style, not appreciating the achievement but degrade the World Award winners.
