PA-JVP accord no bar to negotiations with LTTE

The Memorandum of Understanding reached between the PA and the JVP will not be an obstacle to bringing the LTTE to the negotiating table, Matara district MP and former Minister Mangala Samaraweera said at a press conference on the MoU, yesterday. It would in no way deter foreign donors and investors since it ensures the Government's stability.
Mr. Samaraweera said the Government was still ready to negotiate with the LTTE and was giving a solution to the ethnic problem the highest priority. The MoU allows the Government even to propose devolution of power or bring any controversial proposals after a broad consensus is arrived at through dialogue and the participation of all segments of society. Ranil re-submits No Confidence Motions

With mounting pressure from his party and challenges from the Government, Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe was forced to re-submit two No Confidence Motions to the Speaker yesterday at the party leaders meeting, according to political sources. The No Confidence Motion against the Government was re-submitted by Mr. Wickremesinghe when he was challenged by Leader of the House Dr. Richard Pathirana, sources said.

Jeers for LTTE

Pro-LTTE rabble rousers and an Australian newspaper had to eat humble pie, when Sri Lankan expatriates gave the mob a taste of its own medicine in Melbourne on Sunday. The vociferous Tiger protestors who tried to embarrass Sri Lanka's High Commissioner, Major General Janaka Perera were jeered at by members of the Sri Lankan community.
