Youth drug abuse - the silent epidemic Illicit drug consumption among youth has increased throughout the
world in recent years, and despite the lack of comprehensive data, there is enough
information to show that Sri Lanka is following this rising trend. According to the
National Dangerous Drug Control Board there are about 40,000 users of heroin and about
200,000 users of cannabis in Sri Lanka. The statistics reveal that of the total arrested
for drug abuse last year 47% were between 15 and 30 years and over 42% of the admissions
to the hospitals for treatment were also between the age of 15 and 30. Other Stories |
