SAARC Friendship Village in Nawalapitiya
President Mahinda Rajapaksa will ceremonially open the Nawalapitiya
SAARC Friendship Village on July 27.
The houses have been constructed for middle income earners with the
participation of beneficiary families by the National Housing
Development Authority to mark the 15th SAARC Summit, National Housing
Development
Authority General Manager Wasantha Wijeratne said yesterday.

Dr. S. Kant Sharma will be the Chief Guest at the opening ceremony.
Addressing the media at Government Information Department Wijeratne
said
that the scheme was constructed with the direct labour and technical
guidance of NHDA. The NHDA allocated Rs. 250,000 financial assistance
for each beneficiary family and Rs. 250,000 financial contribution was
made by the beneficiary family selected for the project.
One Hundred families representing diverse ethnic communities will be
settled in the scheme to ensure closer links among the communities.
Addressing the media Deputy General Manager (Information and
Publicity) of NHDA L. S. Palansooriya said that the idea for the scheme
was mooted by President Mahinda Rajapaksa during his visit to Kandy.
The beneficiary families rendered labour during the construction
process together with the masons, technicians and carpenters. The active
involvement of the political bodies of the area was also crucial in
implementing the programme. The construction work on the scheme was
inaugurated in April and completed in hundred days.
Addressing the media NHDA Chairman Mohammed Rafeek said that the
housing scheme has been planned according to the present technical
changes in the world. The interior portion of the house consists all
essential facilities.
Foreign Affairs Minister Rohitha Bogollagama, Housing Minister
Geethganjana Gunawardane, Housing and Common Amenities Minister Ferial
Ashraff, Power and Energy Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage and several
other invitees will take part in the opening ceremony.
